Fellowship Year:
Shihezi University

Apart from a couple of failed attempts at boarding school and a few months working on a sailing ship, Conrad has never lived outside the New York area.  The magical calling of Princeton in Asia and the greedy palms of West Village slumlords have conjoined to create the ideal escape opportunity so he's off to take part in the Xinjiang land grab.  He joins the mass of modern pioneers who according to his hosts “drank the natural pond water from Gobi desert, lived in cellar, use the military map as production map, the productive tools were not available, they cast the sword as a plough.” While dropping some knowledge on his students in Shihezi he hopes to shake his penchant for sports injuries.
