Nikola Gucic

May 22, 2007

Niko is the lone PiA-er in Indonesia this year, but he does not feel lonely because a shy mouse and a 4-inch spider keep him company at home. Nikola comes from Croatia and gets a kick every time people call him a native speaker. He lives in a compound of a traditional Javanese extended family. (They blast music from three different directions at 6:30 am every morning). He also recently joined a diving club at Atma Jaya University (Unit Selam Atma - USA), a rather eclectic group of characters who take cigarette breaks between drills. He recently climbed Merapi and hiked a cave south of Bantul. After a couple of months in Yogya he feels it is perfectly natural to park his motorcycle next to the dining table and complains that $1 for dinner is 'so unreasonable'. Niko is blown away by the warm welcome and kindness of people in Yogyakarta. He thinks Indonesia is 'so beautiful' but continues to promote tourist packages to Croatia.
