Even Pay

March 22, 2006

Even Pay is still not sure if she is a first or second year PiA fellow. Placed off-cycle last November, Even has spent the last seven months loving her job with Pesticide Eco-Alternatives Center (PEAC) in Southwestern China's Yunnan province. In that time, she has managed to learn more about insecticides and herbicides than she thought possible. Near fluent in Mandarin, she spend the first week of June serving as the primary translator at China's first ever NGO-government cooperative conference on genetically modified food products. Working in China has given her an extreme level of respect for accurate citations in research, as she attempts to polish her coworkers' English language scientific journal articles for publication and instead is forced to track down Chinese language reference material. She insists that she has learned more Chinese in the last seven months with PEAC than in four years of college study. Even divides her free time between eating street food and being sick afterwards.
