Caroline Carter

March 22, 2005

After graduating from Princeton University in 2004, Caroline became a PIA fellow teaching high school math in Korea. After a fantastic year there, she moved to East Timor as one of three frontier PiA fellows living in East Timor. Working at NDI, a democracy building NGO, she has stumbled upon what she considers to be the perfect job. At work, she spends half of the day assisting program officers in developing and reporting on civic education programs, and the other half teaching english to her co-workers. Highlights of the year have included attending village meetings in the countryside amidst noisy farm animals, watching several of her beginner English students voluntarily give a speech in  English in front of a large party, and becoming popular because she has air conditioning and 24-hour power at her house. She is particularly enjoying working in an office that is now entirely Timorese because she can learn about the culture and practice speaking the local language with her friends at work. It has far surpassed her expectations in every respect.
