Brent Scharschmidt

December 22, 2005

Brent Scharschmidt is living in northern Thailand teaching English at the International College of Payap University, in Chiang Mai. His students come from all over Asia and are way cooler and more interesting than he ever was in college, affirming the adage that teachers usually learn as much from their students as the other way around. In his public speaking class, for example, his third-year students give speeches about everything from modern Thai fashion to how to hunt wild boar in rural Burma. Outside of class Brent spends most of his time at his favorite restaurant in town, practicing his Thai with the owners and tutoring their children in exchange for free food - a true bargain. He has also taken advantage of the frequent Buddhist holidays to explore Thailand by motorbike, recently completing a 1,600km trip to Laos to visit fellow PiA-ers in Vientiane. The experience of living in Asia has been more rewarding than Brent imagined, and in 2007 he plans to move to the Thai-Burmese border and work with an NGO doing health education with refugee and hill-tribe populations, before eventually returning to the US to work in public health.
