Ben Shell

July 22, 2005

After graduating with a degree in philosophy from Princeton in June of 2005, Ben Shell boarded a plane and flew to Thailand.  In his nine months of teaching English at Khon Kaen University, he still manages to be surprised almost every day. Ben has come to appreciate ambiquity, a deep sense of personal generosity, vegetarian food, and the merits of extracurricular English language activities for Thai students. Towards the end of the academic year, Ben was involved in coaching a rookie debate team that competed in the national championships, and  public relations faculty advisor to a student production of an 18th century English comedy. He even managed to get The Nation, one of two major English language newspapers in Thailand, to send a reporter up from Bangkok to cover the play, resulting in a full page article.  The play was financed entirely by local business sponsorship and ticket sales, and featured detailed period sets and costumes, as you can see in this picture of Ben with the two leading actresses (Ben is the one without a hat).
