Andrew Matthews

April 22, 2006

Andrew took a leap of faith and left for Asia in June 2006 to teach English at the Science University of Malaysia in Penang. Despite looking 18 years old, Andrew managed to convince his 19-21 year-old students that he was at least 26, without saying a word. Though Andrew considers himself a weathered veteran at teaching present perfect tense, dependent clauses, and at imitating an English accent for students in a former British colony, he has truly found his niche in the Asian wilderness. Andrew has dived in Pulau Perhentian, Koh Phi Phi, and Pulau Sipidan and has hiked a number of Borneo national parks including Bako, Similajau, and Niah (in Sarawak) and Mt. Kinabalu (in Sabah). While resting in Penang, Andrew has found time to learn guitar, play doubles tennis with a few older Chinese women (ay yoooo!) and tutor a bit too. The PiA experience has been so much more than Andrew ever imagined. He hopes to develop and pursue his interests in religious liberty in SE Asia and in the relationship between truth and culture. Had his mom not registered him a missing person, he might've considered a second year in Asia!
