Hilary Smith

December 6, 2005

Hilary Smith had a wonderful time teaching English as a PiA intern at the Dalian University of Technology in 1998-99. This involved delicate tasks such as explaining that “piss” is not a word one should use with abandon in a formal setting (like the PiA website). Since then, the example of her students has inspired her to persevere in her own studies, and she’s enjoyed comparing notes with them as they’ve pursued their Ph.D.s in science and engineering (very practical) and she’s pursued hers in Chinese history (less so). Currently at Beijing University doing dissertation research, she credits PiA with turning her flirtation with Asia into what promises to be a lifetime commitment. And yes, that’s a good thing.
