This richly illustrated volume tells the remarkable story of Princeton-in-Asia and the 1,200 young men and women who have served as teachers and international development workers in 24 countries over the first 100 years. Along the way, it is also the story of Asian-American relations in the 20th Century -- not diplomatic or commercial links but the people-to-people ties that seldom make it into the history books.

Written and edited by Melanie Kirkpatrick, a former Princeton-in-Asia fellow in Japan. Princeton-in-Asia: A Century of Service draws on archival material and oral reminiscences. 9 alumni contributed articles on their internships, including life in prerevolutionary China in the 1910's, in Japan Inc. in the 1970's, and in Kazakhstan and Vietnam in the 1900's.

Among Princeton-in-Asia's early achievements were the first social history of village and urban life in China, by Sidney D. Gamble '12, and the establishment of the Princeton Yenching School of Public Affairs at Yenching University, the predecessor of Beijing University. Today, Princeton-in-Asia is the biggest employer of Princeton University's senior class and sponsor of Princeton-in-Beijing, an intensive Chinese language program.
